Newborn FAQ’s

When do newborn sessions take place?

Newborn photography is best scheduled between 5-14 days following birth, while you baby is sleepy most of the time.  Please book your session in advance by giving me a call or email as soon as you know your due date.  I will pencil in a date for your photography session, then as soon as baby arrives, contact me again to confirm.

Where will the photo shoot take place?

At your home.  I will bring all my props, outfits, beanbag, backdrops and equipment along with me.  I will need around 5ft x 5ft of space to set up.  I can do a combination of posed newborn and lifestyle photographs using your home as a backdrop.  I like to encourage you to also think about props, if baby has a special blanket or bear, it is nice to incorporate something personal into the photographs.

How do I prepare for the session?

There are several things to pay attention to before the session.

Please do not feed your little one before I have arrived and setting up, otherwise he/she will fall asleep too early and it might be hard to settle him/her when I am ready to photograph.

If baby has flaky skin, please DO NOT put cream or anything greasy on their skin. A few blemishes and dry skin are easier to photograph than greasy/shiny skin.

If you would like any lifestyle photographs, please make sure the room is reasonably tidy and clear from clutter.

Another very important thing to remember is make sure the house is nice and warm. Baby’s body temperatures drop very quickly when they are undressed, so we need to make sure he/she is warm and cosy. I will bring an additional heater if required.

What should we wear?

Simple is best.  I will discuss options with you before starting, and often photograph newborns wearing nothing or minimum clothing, I love to see tiny hands and feet!  I recommend that the rest of the family wear light coloured clothing that coordinates, avoid logos and busy patterns that might clash.

How long will my newborn session last?

Newborn sessions are anywhere from two to four hours long.

How long after the session can we expect the images?

You will receive a link to a password protected online gallery to view your photographs around 3-4 weeks after your photo shoot, sometimes less.  You can send this link around to friends and family and they can order prints online from this gallery.  I also offer print packages, digital files and wall art.

Do you have experience photographing newborn babies safely?

I have over 2 years experience photographing newborn babies and have been trained to handle and pose them safely by UK leading baby photographer Sarah Wilkes.
